This easy homemade apple pie filling will warm your body and heart.

Simple Homemade Apple Pie Filling

I’ve seen jars of apple pie filling sold in specialty stores and always thought it was a great idea. You can use it to accompany ice cream, pancakes or alone as a treat.

The best part about apple pie filling is that you skip the crust (which is sad for many). Why is this cool? Pie dough is made with a ton of butter (or lard) and flour and adds a lot of calories to the pie. I never knew how to make a low calorie base.

This way, you can enjoy apple pie without going over your calorie budget.

Some other ideas I’ve had include my healthy apple crisp recipe and my apple chips recipe.

I made this in a slow cooker because I love the convenience of being able to walk away for hours and not think about what I’m cooking. I used a slow cooker liner for easy cleanup, so this whole project was a breeze.

The house smelled so good when this was cooking. It amazes me how cooking apples smells like home. Maybe it’s because I live in New England.

If you live in Santa Fe, does the fragrance of roasted chiles smell like home? I’d love to know what kitchen smells make people calmer and more comfortable.

All you have to do is peel, core and slice the apples (mix them into the topping) and cook for a couple of hours. It’s really simple and makes it easy to cut down on sugar. I cut the sugar in half from another recipe I found and thought it was pretty sweet.

There are only 8 grams of added sugar in one serving (about 1 ½ teaspoons). Most of the sugar comes from apples.

I keep it in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container and warm it up a little when I want a dessert.

What would you make with this apple pie filling?
