I’ve had my sauna blanket for a while and I LOVE it. Here is my review of the HigherDOSE sauna blanket and all the details you need to know before trying it. Get 20% off with code KATHEATS20 and my affiliate link Just this week! Offer valid until 1/30.

I’ve had my eye on HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket for years now. I kept convincing myself that we didn’t need one at home because we have access to a steam sauna in our gym.

Thomas and I are sauna users who love to work up a good sweat and we love using the gym’s sauna all year round (definitely more in the winter). So I’ve been interested in having a sauna at home for a while, but I kept convincing myself that being able to use the gym’s steam sauna several times a week was “good enough.”

But what finally sold me on the HigherDOSE sauna blanket was listening to HigherDOSE founders Lauren and Katie on the Goal Digger podcast. I knew I would love the warmth of a sauna at home, but I didn’t realize infrared light had so many benefits. Cozy, relaxing spa vibes AND health benefits? Sign me up! Plus, I love that it’s small and portable, so it was a good way to see if we were into an at-home sweat session without the upfront cost of installing a huge wooden sauna in the basement.

I bought my sauna blanket during Black Friday when it was 20% off. If you missed that deal, you can get 20% off with my affiliate link and code KATHEATS20 anything on the HigherDOSE site Just this week! Good until 1/30.

HigherDOSE Sauna Blanket Review

HigherDOSE creates products that use light technology to support well-being. This is a form of biohacking, which involves using technology or tools to affect your health at a cellular level. In addition to the sauna blanket, their red light mask and infrared PEMF grounding mats are very popular products.

HigherDOSE also focuses on using low-toxicity and medical-grade materials, as well as making products with very low EMF so that the radiation emitted does not negate the benefits (not all sauna blankets have this in mind!)

The blanket says “Get High Naturally” on the side and I can attest that a session leaves me very zen. That’s where the name HigherDOSE comes from. A natural high + DOSE = Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins. All the chemicals that make you feel good.

The benefits of infrared

The older I get, the more I feel the need to help my body and cells repair themselves and function at their best. Recovery time from training has increased and I am stiffer than before. Infrared can help with this! Infrared light generates heat. Unlike a steam sauna that heats the air and then warms you from the outside in, the infrared sauna heats it directly so that you warm from the inside out. You know when you feel chilled to the bone in winter? This is the solution you need.

You might think that a sauna blanket is only good for getting a good sweat (I did!), but the benefits of infrared include:

  • Increase blood flow and circulation
  • Faster muscle recovery, due to increased blood flow.
  • Increased heart rate (aka increasing metabolism and burning calories while you relax)
  • Possible reduction of chronic pain.
  • Reduction of oxidative stress.
  • Detoxification through sweat.
  • Stress reduction through relaxation.

Read more about benefits at the cleveland clinic. Unless you are sick or pregnant, there is no downside to the sauna, so why not try it and see how your body does?

What I have experienced

  • I have an Apple Watch and I measured my heart rate at rest and while using the sauna. My resting heart rate is about 60 and during peak sauna use it was consistently between 74 and 76 bpm. So I definitely saw a spike. Is that going to be born with 400 calories? Probably not. But it was a sign that the heat was having an effect on my circulatory system and it was doing what it says it does!
  • My skin is not that dry. Super hot showers and baths are one way to warm up your core, but they leave my skin dry. The sweat from the blanket has helped my skin maintain more moisture and has helped promote glowing skin instead of the crocodile look I sometimes get in the winter.
  • Extreme relaxation!!! I read that the sauna can “improve the quality of your relaxation” and that is 100% true for me. More on that below.
  • This upcoming soccer season will be a real test for me and my foot that gets stiff after games.
  • And even if all of the above is a placebo effect, placebos work. It’s always worth having a cozy meditation session after a busy day, infrared or not. Infrared makes me want to do it.

How does the HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket work?

The blanket is like an electric blanket with infrared light. There are several layers:

  • leather cape: Wipe-dry and touch layer is made of low-EOC leather
  • Far Infrared Heat Layer: All that good heat!
  • Coal and clay layers– Deepens your detoxification, emits negative ions and balances heat.
  • Magnetic layer: A grounded medical grade magnetic strip improves blood flow and circulation.
  • crystal layer: That emits negative ions and does other wonderful things!

To use it:

  • Unroll it, plug it in and turn it on to the desired temperature level. I started with 5 and went up to 7. Make sure you are on a heat resistant surface, although I found that carpet is fine.
  • Once preheated, it will beep a few times.
  • You’ll want a barrier between you and the blanket, whether it’s loose clothing, your own towels around you, or one of the HigherDOSE Sleeping Bag Towels.
  • Slip in and totally relax. I usually start sweating in about 15 minutes and feel like I’ve reached a happy point in about 35-45 minutes.

HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Convenience: As far as home infrared saunas go, this couldn’t be more convenient. When not in use, it takes up about 2 feet of space and can easily slide under the bed. Verify my youtube video Because of how easy it is to store!
  • You can lie down: Something I didn’t really think about while sitting in the sauna at the gym is how relaxing it is to sweat lying down. In my opinion it is one of the biggest advantages of the blanket. Lying on the floor is grounding, relaxing and comfortable.
  • Heats up quickly: Since the blanket only has to heat a small portion of volume, it heats up super fast. I’ve heard this is a big drawback of larger saunas: you have to heat them for a long time to get them hot enough.
  • VERY HOT! I really didn’t know if I could sweat well because I’m actually not a natural sweater. This is getting very hot. You will sweat!
  • Forced relaxation: I originally envisioned myself multitasking or working on my laptop here, but I find it so relaxing and the heat can be kind of intense that it’s a forced relaxation for me. Even listening to a podcast can be a little overwhelming. This is the first time in my life that I have a meditation practice.

  • Cost: Compared to a walk-in sauna, the cost is probably a big plus, but I know the blanket isn’t affordable for most people. I just found out that HigherDOSE is now HSA-friendly, meaning you can use your HSA/FSA accounts for your purchase. More about that here.
  • towels: I tried to get by without his towels and I wish he came with one! I ended up buying one and I like using it. I would say that half the time I do it in my sports or comfortable clothes and half the time (when I plan to stay for a while) I use the towel. The towels They are quite large and cumbersome to wash and dry, however, for the best sweat session I do recommend them.
  • Shower required: Some might call this an advantage, but the fact that sweat means you want to shower afterwards means that, for me, the times of day I can use the blanket are somewhat limited as to whether or not I’ll be able to shower afterwards ( especially if I’m wearing makeup, hair, etc.) However, sometimes I just put it on and stay until I’m warm but not sweaty (usually 10-15 minutes) and that means I get the benefits without needing to shower.

HigherDOSE Sauna Blanket Honest Review

Physical benefits

I’ve been using the sauna blanket since November and I love it! The relaxation benefits are immediate. Cellular profits are much harder to track. While there are too many variables in my life to say anything helped me, I will say that my body has felt good and agile since I started using it. My skin feels less dry this winter and I am DEFINITELY less cold!!! I’ll turn it on for a quick sauna blanket session any time of day just to warm up. My kids also love it for this reason and also use it at a lower temperature for about 10 minutes.

Mental benefits

The mental benefits are also compounding. I’ve written before that I mainly use reading to relax because it helps me disconnect my mind. When I start a sauna session, I usually find a guided meditation on Apple Music (this playlist has a great variety) and choose one that lasts between 25 and 30 minutes. Time flies and my brain is really empty. It’s been great for me! Most of the time I get into the blanket at the end of a workout, so I’m already in my workout clothes and can jump around as is or put a towel on in my underwear. I do shorter sessions when I combine them with training and longer sessions on rest days. I would say I use the blanket 4 out of 7 days a week. Time is the number one reason I do it more.

The investment

Investing in your health is priceless. Before I bought the blanket, I always wanted to go to a spa so I could relax at a table with spa music. This sauna blanket creates the same feeling at home and costs the same as ONE spa day, but I can use it over and over again. So while it’s an investment, it’s something you can treat yourself to over and over again. The return on investment is worth it!
